RUN by ADP versus HR for Health Software

Managing human resources is a tedious, yet critical, requirement for every business -- especially for small healthcare practices with limited resources. As the Apple ad used to say, “There’s an app for that.” Or in this case, there’s a software platform. There are many cloud-based HR platforms to choose from that doctors, pharmacists, etc., can use to ease the burden of human resources with expert support and easy-to-use software.

If you’re trying to find HR software to help streamline managing your employees’ HR needs, you must do your research to find the software that best fits your practice’s needs. Services from ADP could be an option for you, especially their RUN Powered by ADP or ADP TotalSource services. This article provides an overview of reviews, features, and pricing of RUN Powered by ADP and a quick look at ADP TotalSource and compare it to HR for Health.

This RUN Powered by ADP and ADP TotalSource review will allow you to compare and contrast their services with those from HR for Health.

Who is ADP?

The company describes itself on its website as follows:

“We are a comprehensive global provider of cloud-based human capital management (HCM) solutions that unite HR, payroll, talent, time, tax and benefits administration, and a leader in business outsourcing services, analytics and compliance expertise. Our unmatched experience, deep insights and cutting-edge technology have transformed human resources from a back-office administrative function to a strategic business advantage.”

ADP offers solutions for companies of every size -- from small offices to the Fortune 100. For this comparison, this article will primarily focus on RUN Powered by ADP, which is most similar to HR for Health’s solution. This article also covers ADP TotalSource, an HR outsourcing service.

What Does ADP Offer?

ADP offers services to manage human talent from hiring to payroll. They aren’t focused on any industry or business size; providing human resources and payroll services for all companies.

  • Payroll ADP will process a business’ payroll and integrate with HR systems, ERPs, time tracking, and business software. Employee and manager self service is available online and in the app.
  • Time & Attendance ADP offers a simple time and attendance tool to manage labor costs. The more in-depth Workforce Management tool provides scheduling, labor forecasting/budgeting, attendance policies, and more.
  • Talent Help with recruiting and hiring as well as additional services for managing in-house talent for professional growth.
  • Benefits & Insurance Help with retirement, administering benefits, group health insurance, business insurance, and workers’ compensation.
  • HR Services Consulting services that range from creating templates and policies to providing support and advice for mergers, acquisitions, and reorganizations.
  • HR Outsourcing & PEO ADP can take over some of your HR tasks through a partner who is an extension of your current HR staff. Alternatively, partner with ADP as a professional employee organization and ADP will fully manage all aspects of your HR and payroll.

ADP is just that -- a company that provides payroll and HR solutions to businesses of any size with basic consulting to total management of a business’ human resources needs.

As you can see, ADP offers a broad range of payroll and HR services. However, the majority of these services exceed the needs of small practices and are only relevant for mid-sized businesses and large corporations. However, the majority of these services exceed the needs of small practices and are only relevant for mid-sized businesses and large corporations.

The services relevant for comparison here are RUN Powered by ADP and, to a lesser extent, ADP TotalSource.

RUN Powered by ADP is a payroll processing solution with an HR component. There are four levels of progressively comprehensive service. All levels include payroll services. The HR support is minimal until the top two tiers of service. Even then, practices are on their own to handle HR with only HR helpdesk support -- there is no dedicated HR manager in this product package.

There are four tiers of the RUN Powered by ADP offering:

  • Core: Basic payroll and new hire onboarding
  • Enhanced: Includes state unemployment insurance management and background checks for potential employees
  • Complete (Payroll & HR Plus): Additional HR features such as a handbook wizard, HR forms and documents, an HR helpdesk, and HR forms or documents
  • HR Pro (Payroll & HR): Help desk support with a designated team of HR advisors, assistance in creating your employee handbook, employer and employee training, and sexual harassment prevention training

ADP TotalSource is a PEO solution. ADP becomes your HR provider. You and your employees have access to a cloud-based platform to track your HR needs. ADP TotalSource includes a dedicated HR professional, the ability to select benefits such as insurance and 401(k) plans, workplace safety and liability insurance, complete payroll,

HR for Health’s services and cloud platform match up well with ADP’s HR and payroll services. HRFH’s standard Compliance Navigator Package includes, but is not limited to:

  • Complete compliance review

  • Simple and easy time tracking

  • Performance and task management tools

  • A document vault designed to adhere to all relevant federal, state, and industry-specific retention requirements

  • Automated workflows of HR documents that require a signature

  • E-signatures so employees can sign documents online

  • New hire onboarding

  • HR advice and custom employee handbook based on your industry and state and local regulations

  • New hire documents

  • Live HR support

  • Sexual harassment training

  • Employer and employee training

HRFH’s Compliance Complete Package includes the above plus payroll support and workplace posters. How do these packages compare to ADP’s?

HR Pro from ADP is comparable to HRFH’s Compliance Complete Package. The Compliance Navigator Package from HRFH is HR Pro, minus payroll services. The other two ADP service packages -- Essential and Enhanced -- are focused on the payroll needs of small businesses with HR support limited to new hire onboarding.

HR for Health’s online platform and HR coaching matches up well with ADP TotalSource’s PEO solution. While you still do have to handle your HR yourself, HR for Health provides tools, resources and guidance you need to handle any HR situation with confidence.

ADP vs. HR for Health: Pros and Cons

ADP Pros

As a large company, ADP offers a full range of HR and payroll services. They can provide for every HR and payroll need for companies of any size. Here are some of the pros of RUN Powered by ADP:

  • Outsource your payroll
  • Four levels of service to fit a variety of needs
  • Employer and employee training available at higher service tiers
  • HR help desk support
  • Access to HR documents and best practices in a cloud-based portal
  • New hire onboarding
  • Background checks
  • Single online platform to manage both payroll and employee HR documentation

ADP Cons

The fact that ADP has such an extensive range of services can also be a negative -- for many smaller practices, the services offered by ADP are overkill. At the lower level packages, they also fall short on offering the simple HR needs practices such as small pediatrician or optometrist offices need.

  • ADP’s roots are in payroll. Their basic services lead with payroll with HR options in higher-level (and more expensive) service tiers
  • Software is limited to performance management and document storage
  • Time tracking and scheduling is an add-on, not core component
  • No phone support for 1-4 employees
  • Not specific to an industry
  • Employee handbook is only available as an option in the larger packages
  • Direct support is limited in lower service tier

HR for Health Pros

Human resources is the core of what HR for Health does. It was developed to make human resources issues disappear for its customers -- healthcare practices.

  • In-depth expertise and knowledge of the intricacies of HR needs for practices such as dentists, optometrists, veterinarians, physicians, chiropractors, surgeons, physical therapists, and pharmacists
  • Payroll services are nearly identical to those offered by ADP TotalSource
  • All HR documentation and time/performance tracking are included in all levels of service
  • Extensive HR coaching
  • Employee handbook, updated yearly, available for all customers
  • All employee documents are stored in a cloud-based document vault
  • Direct access to HR experts for answers to any HR-related question as well as emergency issue escalation with HR for Health’s legal team
  • Ongoing monitoring of changes to laws so you will always remain in compliance
  • Simple, compliant, and accessible time-keeping features

HR for Health Cons

HR for Health isn’t as hands-on as some of ADP’s services, particularly ADP TotalSource. HRFH provides coaching to employers on software use and HR questions, but doesn't directly interact with a practice’s employees. While HR for Health’s services are perfect for practices, they may not be a perfect fit for other industries.

How Much Does ADP Cost?

There is no pricing publicly available on the ADP website. You can ask for a quote for each of ADP’s products via a simple questionnaire on their site. They also offer incentives for signing up to various services, such as three months free on sign up for RUN.

RUN has a set up fee -- although there’s no publicly available information for how much it is. Payroll processing with limited HR features is about $170/month for a mid-sized office of 15 or so.

Comparing HR for Health - Pricing Structure and Costs

HRFH has two tiers of service with a simple fee structure. Even the HR for Health highest level of service is often less costly than two hours of work from an HR consultant (assuming $150/hour) -- and how much work can you really get done in two hours! And, remember, you’re also buying peace of mind -- knowing that HR for Health experts are doing all the work in the background to ensure compliance with the ever-changing kaleidoscope of HR rules on a state and federal level.

HR for Health has a pricing model that is appropriate for most health practices.

  • Monthly fee of $225 for 4+ employees, discounted rate for startup practices with 1-3 employees
  • One-time single location setup fee of $795; multiple location setup fee starts at $895 with discount of $200 per location.
  • Free customized employee handbook with free annual updates
  • Compliance complete package, including integrated payroll and workplace posters. Setup fee starts at $1295 and monthly fee starts at $395

What Others Are Saying About Their Experiences with ADP and HR for Health

ADP

Overall reviews for ADP TotalSource and RUN Powered by ADP are positive, with plenty of kudos for responsive account reps, features, and overall value. The majority of reviews HR for Health reviewed relative to RUN Powered by ADP focused on the payroll, not HR, features of the product. While reviews were very positive, it was clear that ADP leads with payroll, not HR, value.

“Easy access to all my HR, Payroll and benefits information at a click of a button. I would highly recommend this software for busy office administrators to simplify day to day tasks. I like knowing that I can access the software remotely when I am traveling and I get the same information as I would if I used it in the office. The accessibility is one of the best things this software has to offer.” -- Chastity D., General Manager

“It handles many traditional HRIS functions and also stores employee documents. Benefit enrollments and changes are handled completely by ADP. Minimizes the amount of paperwork needed for new hires. Has reporting features that can connect to existing accounting software.” -- Stacey L., HR Director, Information Services

All is not perfect though. ADP TotalSource Reviews on Capterra revealed a few weaknesses. The most common criticism of the service focused on ease-of-use. With multiple customers mentioning saving passwords and pulling reports as being awkward processes. Overall though, once customers became familiar with ADP TotalSource, most of them were pleased with the product. A few customers -- even those who otherwise liked the tool -- also complained of poor customer service and delays in response.

HR for Health

As a company, HR for Health takes great pride in the many positive reviews and opinions of our customers. Here are a few.

“I have been with HR for Health for several years now! I must say, I am so grateful for having them on my side. They have helped me remain compliant with all the California labor rules, they have helped make my employee hours consistent with their standardized time clock, and they always let me know if there are any new labor law changes.  BEST PART is their dedication to EXCELLENT customer service and for making their customers their top priority!” -- Brian Toorani

“This company has been SO helpful during the COVID HR nightmare. They are the best and so easy to ask questions/communicate with. Highly recommended! “-- Niekia Franklin

“We finally made a decision to have an outside service manage our HR.  It was one of the best decisions we have ever made.  The team at HR for health has been prompt, and efficient.  It has made our lives so easy and the best part is that we know we are compliant with the law and are never in the dark about  touchy topics such as termination and paid family leave.  They respond to all our questions within a day and even track our benefits for our employees.  There is no maintaining paper files anymore. Our employees can go online and look at everything in their records. Our handbook is the best we have ever had, very particular and detailed so that we as a company are as protected as our employees.  They are worth every penny when we live in such a litigious society!” -- Rabee McDonald

“Very helpful to me from setting up my practice, hiring staff, coaching staff and when necessary terminating staff. We are a small optometry practice & it is reassuring to have a professional team to run things by.” -- George Meers OD

Many well-known and trustworthy brands and organizations endorse or use HR for Health. Those include, but are not limited to, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), Vision Source, Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

How Does HR for Health Stack Up in Comparison?

  • The biggest difference is that HR for Health is FIRST an HR platform. RUN Powered by ADP is first a payroll service. HR help is only included in the top two (and most expensive) tiers. All of HR for Health’s services include essential HR functionality like time and performance tracking, online access to HR documentation, HR advising, and document automation and e-signatures. Time and attendance is an add-on across all four service tiers of RUN; it’s a key piece in all levels of the HR for Health platform.
  • ADP TotalSource has been criticized by users for it’s interface. HR for Health is designed for cloud-based simplicity and ease-of-use.
  • ADP provides services for any company in any industry, their expertise is broad. HR for Health is focused on healthcare and our knowledge of HR in the healthcare industry is unmatched.
  • You can outsource 100% of your HR needs with ADP. HR for Health provides coaching, but you still must handle HR issues in-house.

While many favorable comments for ADP TotalSource pointed to the positives of being able to access HR and payroll in a single platform, many of the reviews were focused on their payroll, not HR, capabilities.

Is ADP Right for You?

If you can find the right mix of services at a good price point, ADP is a well-known company that does an excellent job with processing payroll. ADP can also support the human resources needs for businesses of all sizes. While the company has deep resources and HR expertise, they are a generalist company. They are also a very large company. As the reviews indicate, with such a large number of customers, smaller customers can get lost in the shuffle.

If you need payroll services for your small practice, ADP is an excellent and cost-effective choice. If your needs are more focused on human resources, those services are only provided in the two higher-cost tiers (Complete and HR Pro) of RUN Powered by ADP.
